Talented Trio Takes Men's Soccer Awards

MAAC Offensive Player of the Week

MATT NEEDHAM, Siena

B, So., 6-2, 186, Sheffield, England/King Ecgbert School

Matt Needham scored his first two collegiate goals, including the game-winner, and finished with four points in the Saints’ 4-1 win over Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph’s on Sept. 18. In the Saints’ only match of the week, the outside back was the difference maker on the offensive end, scoring on both shots he took. His first goal proved to be the eventual game-winner in the first half, and he added an insurance score early in the second half to put the match out of reach.

MAAC Defensive Player of the Week

BORJA ANGOITIA, Quinnipiac

G, Jr., 6-2, 185, Bilbao, Spain/Erandio and Wasilla

The junior goalie posted a season high 10 saves as the Bobcats battled Army to a 0-0 tie in double overtime. For Angoitia, it was his second consecutive shutout, and he hasn’t allowed a goal in 207 minutes. This was the second time this season that he has been selected as the MAAC’s Defensive Player of the Week.

 MAAC Rookie of the Week

DAVID PASTUNA, Rider

G, Fr., 6-0, 175, Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville High School

Freshman goalkeeper David Pastuna was in the nets for for two shutouts in a 2-0 week for Rider. Pastuna registered five saves in a 1-0 win over St. Bonaventure. He also went the distance in a 1-0 double overtime victory over LIU-Brooklyn.
