Iona College's Avery & Clements Claim MAAC Cross Country Weekly Awards

Edison, N.J. – Iona College’s Kieran Clements and Kate Avery have earned the MAAC Cross Country Runner of the Week awards for the week of September 23rd.

Clements (Hadleigh, England), led a dominating performance by Iona in the 19th Annual Br. Doyle Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park finishing second individually. In his Maroon & Gold cross country debut, Clements ran an 8k time of 25:32.01. His late kick earned him a nearly one and a half second advantage over the third place performer.  The Gaels won the team championship by 60 points over Yale with 210 runners comprising the 20-team race field.

Sophomore Kate Avery (Newton Aycliffe, England), shined in her Maroon & Gold debut, winning the 19th Annual Br. Doyle Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park by more than 55 seconds. Avery won the individual title for the second straight year, running the 6k course in 21:31.03 in the 190 runner field. She ran as an unattached performer in 2012 and had a similar advantage in the win. The Gaels finished second overall out of 20 programs in the team standings.

The 2013 MAAC Cross Country Championships will be held on Friday, November 1st at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
