EDISON, N.J. – Senior guard Billy Baron of Canisius College has been picked as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year by Lindy’s Sports College Basketball Preview. Baron was also selected as the MAAC’s “Top Player” in the Sporting News College Basketball Preview.
Baron was the MAAC’s third leading scorer (17.2 points per game) and leading playmaker (5.0 assists per game) last season, as he led the Golden Griffs to a 20-14 record last season, including 11-7 in MAAC play. Canisius recorded a 15-game turnaround from the 2011-12 to 2012-13.
Lindy’s Preview also tabbed Baron as a preseason first team All-MAAC choice, and he was listed as the league’s top playmaker and the MAAC’s most versatile player. The Sporting News placed Baron on its preseason All-MAAC team.
The Golden Griffs, who were picked to finish third in the MAAC in the Coaches Preseason Poll, open their season on Nov. 11 when they host South Dakota. They will also participate in the Preseason NIT, with an appearance at Rutgers on Nov. 18.
