EDISON, N.J. – Canisius College’s senior guard Billy Baron has been named Corvias ECAC Metro/Upstate Division I Player of the Week.
Baron averaged 30.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists as the Golden Griffins went 2-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action last week. Baron scored at least 25-points in all three games, extending his stretch of 25-plus points to five-straight games.
In a 94-91 double-overtime win against Rider on Jan. 10, Baron scored a career-high 38 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists. Baron, a Bob Cousy Award candidate, hit the game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds of the second OT period to give Canisius the win. The game-winning field goal was featured as the No. 7 play on ESPN’s SportsCenter “Top Ten Plays of the Day.”
Baron also scored 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds at Marist, and tallied 26 points and hauled in eight rebounds vs. Monmouth. For the week, Baron shot 56 percent from the floor, 45 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 91 percent from the foul line. He turned the ball over just four times in 124 minutes of action.
Baron was also named the MAAC’s “Player of the Week” for the second time this season. He was chosen as the MAAC’s “Preseason Player of the Year” in a poll of the league’s coaches prior to the start of the 2013-14 season.
Baron has led Canisius to a 5-1 record in league play, and 11-6 overall. The Golden Griffs are in a three-way tie for first play, and will face another league leader, at Iona, in their next game on Friday, Jan. 14. That game will have a 9:00 p.m. tip time and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
