SPRINGFIELD, MA - Iona College women's basketball juior guard Damika Martinez was one of 29 players named to the watch list of candidates for the 2014 Nancy Lieberman Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today.
The award recognizes the top guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. Candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman.
In 14 games this season, Martinez is averaging a conference leading 24.7 points per game, good for fourth in the nation. She has connected on a team high 44 three pointers, and is shooting a conference best 91.9% from the free throw line. In the Gaels' last contest at Marist, Martinez knocked down a game winning jumper with 2.9 seconds remaining propelling Iona to a 73-71 victory. Martinez has been recognized as MAAC Player of the Week twice this season, and has also earned ECAC Player of the Week honors.
