Iona Remains Perfect in Women's Basketball League Play

EDISON, N.J. – The Iona College Gaels moved to 7-0 in league action and continues to ride its 13 game winning streak. The Gaels opened the week with a 73-71 nail biting victory over Marist at McCann Arena on Monday. Damika Martinez’s jumper from the free throw line with 2.9 seconds left gave the Gaels the win to snap a 29 game losing streak to the Red Foxes. On Saturday, the Gaels knocked off Fairfield 64-59 in a come from behind victory.
Fairfield knocked off Siena 66-65 on Thursday night at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. on ESPN3 in an overtime thriller. The Stags led 56-50 with just 17 seconds remaining in regulation when Siena’s Kelsey Booth hit a 3 to put the Saints within 3 points then another 3 by Kanika Cummings forced overtime. In overtime, the game went back and forth and a late foul with less than a second remaining put Fairfield’s Felicia DaCruz at the line where she connected on the game winning free throw.
Quinnipiac also completed a 2-0 week after knocking off Saint Peter’s 71-40 on Thursday and Siena 70-49 on Saturday at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Marist went 2-1 on the week and bounced back from the Iona loss by defeated Niagara on Friday 74-59 and Canisius on Sunday 73-47.
Canisius, Fairfield, Manhattan, Niagara, and Rider all registered 1-1 weeks, while Monmouth went 1-2.
On the season, Iona is in sole possession of first place at 7-0, while Marist drops to second at 7-1. Quinnipiac moved into third place at 6-3 after their 2-0 week, while Fairfield dropped to fourth at 5-3. Rider remains in fifth place at 4-4 to round out the top five.
League play continues tonight with first place Iona hosting New York City rival Manhattan at 7pm. Tomorrow, Rider welcomes Quinnipiac to Lawrenceville for a 7pm tip off between two top five teams in the league. On Thursday; Manhattan host Niagara and second place Marist will face Saint Peter’s at McCann Arena with both tipoff’s set for 7pm. Friday’s schedule includes; Siena at Rider, Iona at Monmouth, and Canisius at Fairfield all set to start at 7pm. Marist host Niagara at 7pm on Saturday as the lone game of the day. The week will conclude on Sunday with in state rivals Quinnipiac and Fairfield facing off at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. at 1pm. At 2pm Siena will host Canisius, Iona welcomes Saint Peter’s, and Manhattan visits Monmouth.
