Three MAAC First Team Performers On MLS Draft List

EDISON, N.J. – Three seniors who were named to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s soccer First Team squad were included on Major League Soccer’s list of players who were eligible to be selected in the recently concluded 2014 SuperDraft.
Franklin Castellanos of Iona, Simon Hinde of Quinnipiac and Reco McLaren of Fairfield were among the 267 candidates that were eligible to be selected in the SuperDraft. The MLS Draft wrapped up on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
In order to have been selected as draft choice by the MLS, a potential draftee must have his name on the list of MLS draft candidates. MLS teams were required to submit names of players that they might have been interested in selecting in the four rounds of the SuperDraft. Those names are added to a list of Generation adidas signings (seven underclassmen signed to deals this year) and four international players eligible for the SuperDraft. The 2014 SuperDraft began on Thursday, Jan. 16, with Rounds 1 and 2, and continued with Rounds 3 and 4 on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
The 5-10, 150 pound Castellanos was the MAAC’s Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring with 31 points. Castellanos, from Dover, N.J., scored nine goals and added 13 assists to help Iona to a 10-6-5 record a berth in the 2013 MAAC Soccer Championship.
Hinde was second in the MAAC in scoring with 21 points, and led the league in goals with 10. The 6-1, 173-pound Hinde hails from Canberra, Australia. Hinde was a key performer for Quinnipiac which won the 2013 MAAC Championship.
McLaren was sixth in scoring with 18 points, with eight goals and two assists. The 5-10, 160 pound McLaren helped Fairfield to a 8-5-3 record. He hails from Bridgeport, Conn.
