Baron Named Lute Olson Award National Player of the Week

EDISON, NJ. – Senior guard Billy Baron of the Canisius College men’s basketball team has been named the Lute Olson Award National Player of the Week.

The 6-2, 195-pound Baron averaged 34.5 points in two victories for the Golden Griffins last week. He opened the week by scoring 31 points and added three rebounds and three assists in a victory over cross-town rival Niagara. In a victory over Marist on Sunday, he tied his career high with 38 points, and added four rebounds and four steals.

For the week, Baron converted .550 of his field goal attempts (22-of-40), .474 from beyond the three-point arc (9-of-19) and .889 (16-18) from the free throw line. He averaged 37.5 minutes per game.

Baron is currently third in NCAA Divison I in scoring, averaging 24.2 points per game. He has led Canisius to a 14-7 record overall, and a tie for first place in the MAAC with an 8-2 league record.   

The Lute Olson Award is named in honor of the coaching great who won 780 games in 34 seasons, including 24 at the University of Arizona. Olson led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments appearances, four Final Fours and a National Championship in 1997.

Baron was also honored as the College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week.
