Iona's Gillespie & Rehberg Sweep MAAC Indoor Track & Field Performers of the Week

Edison, N.J. –Iona College's Matthew Gillespie and Maya Rehberg have been named this week’s MAAC Indoor Track & Field Male and Female Performer of the Week, for the week of January 27th.
Senior Matthew Gillespie blazed two incredible times to lead the Iona College men's indoor track team this weekend. To start the day, Gillespie ran a time of 4:01.89 in the mile event, good for 10th overall and fifth among collegiate performers. Following Saturday’s performances the time ranked eighth on the 2014 NCAA Indoor Qualifying list.
Then later in the evening, Gillespie shined again in the 3,000-meter run. Gillespie was the top collegiate performer, running a 7:52.24. He was second overall, just .15 seconds behind the race winner. His time is also the second fastest time in the NCAA this season, less than one full second behind Northern Arizona's Brian Shrader's time of 7:51.48. This performance was also the fourth fastest time in Iona history.
Freshman Maya Rehberg was the Gaels' top performer at the Terrier Invitational Friday night, finishing eighth overall in the 3,000-meter event out of 89 competitors. Rehberg's time of 9:28.89 was fourth among collegiate athletes. The time was also an Iona freshman record and third best time overall in school history. Following this weekend’s events the time ranks No. 23 on the 2014 NCAA Indoor Qualifying list.
The 2014 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held on Friday, February 21st at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center in NYC.
