Iona Still Holds Top Spot in Women's Basketball while Marist sits in Second

EDISON, N.J. – The Iona College Gaels won all three of its league contests this week to improve to 10-0 and their streak now stands at a school record 16 straight wins. The Gaels opened the week with a 70-52 victory over Manhattan at Hynes Athletic Center on Monday. On Friday, the Gaels knocked off Monmouth 86-77 on the road and on Sunday, back at home they defeated Saint Peter’s 66-54 to close out the week.
The Marist College Red Foxes registered a 2-0 home week and remain one game off of the Gaels after beating Saint Peter’s on Thursday in Poughkeepsie 71-42 and then winning against Niagara on Saturday 61-52.
The Fairfield University Stags also completed a 2-0 week. The Stags won against Canisius at home on Friday 63-57 and then knocked off in state rival and top five league opponent Quinnipiac 61-52 on the road to complete the season sweep of the Bobcats.
Canisius College, Monmouth University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, and Rider University all registered 1-1 weeks.
Canisius knocked off Siena 75-66 in a road contest in Loudonville, NY on Sunday afternoon. Monmouth defeated Manhattan at home at the MAC by the score of 75-70 on Sunday. Niagara also beat Manhattan 71-67 in Riverdale, NY at Draddy Gymnasium on Thursday evening. Quinnipiac won against Rider on the road in a top five league battle 54-44 on Tuesday. Rider picked up its win against Siena on Friday 73-70 at the Bronc Zoo.
On the season, Iona remains in first place at 10-0, while Marist remains a game out at 9-1. Fairfield improved to 7-3 with its victory over Quinnipiac and moves into third place, while the lost dropped Quinnipiac into fourth place at 7-4. And after another 1-1 week, Rider remains in fifth place at 5-5 to round out the top five. Monmouth and Niagara are tied for sixth at 4-6, Canisius sits in eighth at 4-7, Manhattan is in ninth at 3-7, at 2-8 Saint Peter’s is tenth, and Siena rounds out the standings at 1-9.
League play resumes on Wednesday with two games 7pm. Canisius visits Niagara for the annual ‘Battle of the Bridge” and Rider travels to Marist in a top five league match up. On Thursday at 6 pm, Siena will host Manhattan in Albany at the Times Union Center on ESPN3 as part of the MAAC-ESPN TV package. Also on Thursday, Saint Peter’s host hour glass rival Monmouth at 7 pm and first place Iona host third place Fairfield also at 7pm. The week concludes on Saturday with five games on schedule. First at 1pm, Siena host Iona, then at 2pm, Manhattan host Rider, Saint Peter’s host Fairfield, Monmouth host Marist, and Niagara host Quinnipiac.
