MAAC Sports
EDISON, N.J. – Canisius senior guard Billy Baron, who was honored earlier this week by the MAAC, the Lute Olson Award and College Sports Madness, has been recognized again for his outstanding performances.
Baron, who averaged 34.5 points per game as the Golden Griffins scored victories over Niagara and Marist last week, was named Corvias ECAC Metro/Upstate Player of the Week as well. In the win over Marist, Baron matched his career high with 38 points, including 25 in the game’s first half. Baron was 12-for-23 from the field and set career-highs for field goals made and attempted in a game. He also went 5-for-11 from beyond the 3-point arc, the sixth time this season he has hit at least five 3-point field goals in a contest.
In the team’s 87-74 win over Niagara, Baron scored a game-high 31 points despite having to leave the floor to receive stitches over his eye to close a cut he received when he bumped heads with a Niagara player. For the week, Baron hit .550 percent from the field, .474 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, and .889 percent (16-for-18) from the free-throw line. He also contributed 3.5 rebounds per game, 2.5 steals and 2.5 assists per contest.
Earlier, Baron had been named Player of the Week by the MAAC and College Sports Madness, and was the National Player of the Week honoree by the Lute Olson Award.
Baron is averaging 24.2 points per game, second best in the MAAC and third in NCAA Division I. He is also second in the MAAC with 4.9 assists per game.
