Iona's Gillespie Named Corvias ECAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week

Edison, N.J. – Iona College senior Matthew Gillespie has been named Corvias ECAC Division I Metro/Upstate Men’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week.
Senior Matthew Gillespie blazed two incredible times to lead the Iona College men's indoor track team this weekend. To start the day, Gillespie ran a time of 4:01.89 in the mile event, good for 10th overall and fifth among collegiate performers. Following Saturday’s performances the time ranked eighth on the 2014 NCAA Indoor Qualifying list.
Then later in the evening, Gillespie shined again in the 3,000-meter run. Gillespie was the top collegiate performer, running a 7:52.24. He was second overall, just .15 seconds behind the race winner. His time is also the second fastest time in the NCAA this season, less than one full second behind Northern Arizona's Brian Shrader's time of 7:51.48. This performance was also the fourth fastest time in Iona history.
The 2013 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held on Friday, February 21st at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center in NYC.
