EDISON, N.J. – Three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s soccer programs, Manhattan College, Monmouth University and Rider University, are recipients of the Silver version of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award.

The NSCAA’s College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game, which is reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.

The Silver Award is presented to teams that accumulated no red cards, and a maximum of five yellow cards, during the soccer season.

In all, 256 teams were awarded either the Gold, Silver or Bronze versions of the College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award by the NSCAA. The Gold Award is given to teams that accumulate no red or yellow cards during the season, while the Bronze Award is given to teams that received no more than 10 cards during the year.

The Silver Award was presented to 159 teams, the Gold Award went to 25 teams, and the Bronze Award was presented to 72 teams.

Monmouth, in its first season competing in the MAAC, compiled a 17-2-2 mark overall and won the league’s regular season and tournament championships in 2013. Coach Krissy Turner’s Hawks were the recipients of the MAAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Rider finished last season in a tie for fifth place in the MAAC, and was 9-8-1 overall. Coach Drayson Hounsome’s Broncs were 5-4-1 in league play and advanced to the semifinals of the MAAC Championships.

Manhattan was 6-12-1 overall, and 2-7-1 in MAAC action, last season. Coach Brendan Lawler’s young Jaspers’ squad won its opening round match in the women’s soccer championship, but did not advance in the quarterfinals, falling due to penalty kicks.
