HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey coaching staff has announced the Bobcats' 7th annual Play4TheCure fundraising effort raised over $2,000 that'll be donated in-full to the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Among the deserving causes to which NFCR aligns with, the funds raised by Quinnipiac will directly support the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Prostate Cancer Research and Skin Cancer Research.
For the past seven seasons now, the Bobcats have joined hands with the NFCR and stick sponsor Longstreth Sports to participate in its fundraising campaign, "Play4TheCure." Sports teams from across the country ranging from the professional ranks to college and down to high school are invited to donate proceeds from at least one home game to NFCR. The Quinnipiac field hockey team kickstarted their support back in the 2008 season and have now raised over $11,000 in the seven years since first joining the cause.
Quinnipiac student-athletes, coaches and staff members raised money via online donations for over one month. The team also generated a large sum of the final total through the "Chance Auction" which took place on Sunday throughout the Bobcats' game against No. 19 Old Dominion. The Chance Auction consisted of different baskets full of various items donated by members of the Quinnipiac Athletic Department and varsity teams as well as donations from field hockey student-athletes and their families.
During the Play4TheCure game, the student-athletes wore the pink Play4TheCure t-shirts while the coaches dressed in pink in support of the cause. Fans flocked to the QU Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden for Sunday's Play4TheCure game as the Bobcats fans posted an impressive season-high attendance number of 231. Also during the pregame announcements, Quinnipiac honored all cancer survivors in attendance which drew a wave of applause prior to the start of play as the Bobcats' distinguished Play4TheCure Guests of Honor.
