Byrne Wins 2014 NCAA Division I Cross Country Northeast Regional

BRONX, N.Y. – Jake Byrne of Iona College wins the 2014 NCAA Division I Cross Country Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The Gaels finished third overall among all teams competing in the event.

Byrne’s winning time of 30:26.12 was three seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Connor Benjamin from Providence College. Byrne finished the race with a pace of 4:54 per mile.  He entered today’s race as the 2014 MAAC Men’s Most Outstanding runner for his first place finish at the MAAC Cross Country Championship. Finishing in the top ten at the race from the MAAC was Iona’s Gilbert Kirui who crossed the finish line with a time of 30:38.50, good for tenth overall.

The Iona Men’s Cross Country team finished third as a team with 60 points. Syracuse University came in first with 45 points followed by Providence College with 48 points. Iona is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches’ Poll.

Also competing for the MAAC were Canisius which finished 10th, Quinnipiac (18), Marist (20), Fairfield (27), Siena (28), Manhattan (31) and Niagara (33).
