Avery and Iona win 2014 NCAA Division I Cross Country Northeast Regional

BRONX, N.Y. - Kate Avery led the Iona Gaels Women’s Cross Country team to another top place finish at 2014 NCAA Division I Cross Country Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
Avery finished first overall in the race running the 5k course with a time of 19:49.45 and running at a pace of 5:20 per mile. Following on Avery’s heels was Gael teammate Rosie Clarke who finished in second clocking in at 20:12.84. Tara Jameson, also from Iona, finished sixth with a time of 20:19.66.
Iona finished with three of the 10 top finishers amongst the competition, helping the team finish with a total score of 91. The next closest school was Providence College with a score of 128.
The Gaels are currently ranked No. 17 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches’ Poll, Iona’s first ranking since 2006.
Also competing in the Regional in the MAAC were Quinnipiac who finished in 17, Marist (21), Canisius (28), Siena (32), Fairfield (33), Manhattan (35), and Niagara (39)
