Four Teams Among Current Leaders in MAAC Women's Basketball

EDISON, N.J. – Following the first week of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference league schedule, Canisius College, Marist College, Niagara University and Quinnipiac University lead the standings with 2-0 marks.

Three of the top four teams in the current standings were selected in the top five of the coaches’ preseason polls, with Canisius being selected eighth overall. Quinnipiac and Marist were chosen as the co-preseason favorites, while Niagara was chosen fifth.

On Dec. 5, Niagara defeated Saint Peter’s (11th in the poll), 73-40, at the Gallagher Center on Niagara’s campus. Also on Dec. 5, Canisius defeated Manhattan (seventh in the poll), 55-44, at Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y. To close out the Dec. 5 slate of games, Marist edged Monmouth (ninth in the poll) 75-65, at the McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. On Dec. 7 Quinnipiac outlasted Fairfield (fourth in the poll) 67-66 at Alumni Hall on Fairfield’s campus.

Quinnipiac earned its first win of the week by beating Siena (10th in the poll) 78-65 on Dec. 5 at TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. On Dec. 7, Niagara defeated Manhattan to begin the day, 64-36 at home. Canisius defeated Saint Peters on Dec. 7, 75-50. Marist ended their week with a 60-46 win over Rider at home.

Other league contest results from the week include; Fairfield knocking off Siena, 60-55, at the Alumni Recreation Center (Dec. 3), Iona (third in the poll) defeating Rider (sixth in the poll) 71-51, on the road in Lawrenceville, N.J. (Dec. 5), and concluded with Monmouth (ninth in the poll) overtaking Iona in double overtime 75-74.

Fairfield, Iona, and Monmouth currently sit tied in fifth at an even 1-1 in conference play heading back into non-conference action, while Manhattan, Rider, Saint Peter’s, and Siena hold 0-2 records.

The 2015 season culminates at the 2015 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York, March 5-9. Tickets for the championships are available online at ticketmaster.com.
