MAAC Goodworks Challenge Event Updates (12-3)
MAAC Sports
Fairfield
On November 7th, members from the Women’s Lacrosse team assisted at the Early Learning Center during gym time. Due to the cold weather, the athletes led the children in stretching and short cardio exercises, like jumping jacks, indoors.
Iona
On November 6, members of the Iona College Volleyball team came together to make holiday cards for heroes for a program sponsored by the Red Cross. The American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program is described as "empowering people to 'Give Something that Means Something' by sending a card of thanks and support to the members of the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families". Kind messages and creative drawings filled the cards that were sent out, sending warm, holiday spirit to those who do so much for our country.
Manhattan
NYC Marathon - Madison Bailey (Softball) represented the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society in honor of her mother, who had lymphoma, but has been in remission for three years, and she wore her mother’s name on her race jersey. Bailey began fundraising in June and collected $5,733.55 for the cause.
Marist
Members of the Marist Football team partnered with a local school, Ralph R. Smith Elementary School, for a pen pal program. Each student-athlete was given an elementary student to communicate with by writing letters. The team wrote to their pen pals five times, answering different questions the kids asked them, and the kids attended the Davidson game on November 15th. Finally, on November 19th the team hosted their pen pals in the McCann Center for a pizza party and tour of the facilities.
Saint Peter’s
November 12, 2014, the Men’s and Women’s Swimming team took part in a community service event where we gave swimming lessons to a group of girls from Sacred Heart Elementary School. The group ranged from First Grade all the way up to Seventh Grade.
