Edison, N.J. –Iona College's Matthew Gillespie and Maya Rehberg have been named this week’s MAAC Indoor Track & Field Male and Female Performer of the Week, for the week of February 10th.

Senior Matthew Gillespie recorded the Iona’s fourth-ever sub-four minute mile time to lead the Gaels at the 2014 BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University.

Gillespie blazed a personal best time of 3:58.48, topping his previous best of 3:58.55 last year on the same track at the Terrier Invitational on Jan. 26, 2013. He was fourth overall in the meet and the second collegiate finisher behind Boston University's Rich Peters (3:57.27). Eight runners in the first heat broke the four-minute barrier. The time currently ranks No. 6 on the NCAA Division I qualifying list.

Already a member of the sub-four club at Iona, Gillespie, former teammate Mitch Goose and former Gael standout Richard Kiplagat comprise the group. Kiplagat is the school record holder at 3:57.40 during the 2006 Gotham Cup. Goose posted a 3:59.26 at the 2012 MAAC Championships. The fourth fastest mile in school history belongs to Tim Bayley, a 4:00.24 at the 2007 Husky Classic.

Freshman Maya Rehberg led five members of the Iona College women's indoor track team at the 2014 BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational Friday night. Rehberg finished ninth in the mile and was the fifth collegiate finisher, crossing in 4:44.30.  The time ranks No. 30 on the NCAA Division I qualifying list, is second among MAAC competitors in 2013-14 behind teammate Kate Avery’s 4:38.24 the week prior and a Top 10 time in school history.

The 2014 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held on Friday, February 21st at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center in NYC.
