Top two Women's Basketball Teams fall; Iona Remains in First Place

EDISON, N.J. – On a week that featured two women’s baketball games on ESPN3 broadcast, Rider University pulled off the biggest win of the week when it defeated first place and previously unbeaten in conference action Iona College 92-90 in an overtime thriller on Thursday night’s ESPN3 broadcast.
The win for the Broncs ended the Gaels 18-game winning streak, which was the fourth longest in the country. MyNeshia McKenzie was named the Pepsi Max Player of the Game after she recorded a double double with a Rider record of 37 points and 19 rebounds. Aleesha Powell led Iona with 27 points.
On Friday’s broadcast that featured the Battle of the Bridge rivalry between Canisius College and Niagara University, the Golden Griffins defeated the Purple Eagles 62-53 just eight days after losing to the Purple Eagles at Niagara. Canisius’ Jamie Ruttle was named the Pepsi Max Player of the Game after scoring a game high 19 points and she also added four rebounds. Val McQuade scored a team high 14 points for Niagara.
On Saturday, Fairfield University knocked off first-place Marist College, 72-68, in front of a sellout crowd at McCann Arena, in Poughkeepsie. The Stags had four players score in double figures as they defeated the Red Foxes for the first time since Feb. 09, 2010. Katie Cizynski finished with 20 points, Felicia DaCruz scored 14 points, Alexys Vazquez added 16 points, and Brittany Obi-Tabot registered 10 points for the Stags.
For the week, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, and Rider all registered perfect 2-0 weeks, while Canisius, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, and Siena all split their two games.
On the season, Iona remains in first place at 13-1, and Marist remains a game out at 12-2. Fairfield and Quinnipiac remained tied in third place at 10-4 after both picked up two wins this week. Rider remains in fifth place at 8-6 to round out the top five. Canisius, Manhattan, Monmouth, and Niagara all sit at 5-9, good for a sixth place tie. Saint Peter’s and Siena both have 2-12 records to round out the standings.
League play resumes on Tuesday at 7pm when Marist visits Saint Peter’s. On Thursday at 6 pm, Fairfield will host Rider in Bridgeport, Conn. at Webster Bank Arena on ESPN3. Both teams are currently unbeaten in the month of February and coming off of upset wins over the top teams. Also on Thursday, Siena visits Niagara and Manhattan visits Canisius both at 7 pm. Valentine’s Day schedule features two games. First at 4:30 pm, Iona is hosting Monmouth in New Rochelle. Then On ESPNU Marist will be hosting Quinnipiac at 5 pm in a top five battle and rematch of the first women’s TV broadcast of the season. On tap for Saturday is Saint Peter’s heading to Bridgeport to take on Fairfield at 1:30 pm, Canisius hosting Siena at 2 pm, and Niagara hosting Manhattan at 4 pm. The week concludes on Sunday at 1 pm with Monmouth at Quinnipiac and at 2 pm, Iona hosts Rider in a rematch of top teams and the only team to defeat the Gaels in league play thus far in the season.
