EDISON, N.J. – Junior righty Rohn Pierce of Canisius College was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his efforts in the Golden Griffins’ 3-0 victory over nationally ranked North Carolina State in the season opener.

Pierce scattered five singles and allowed just one walk, while striking out six, in seven shutout innings against the No. 10 Wolfpack. Pierce, who threw 101 pitches, didn’t allow a base runner past second base. He allowed the first two batters to reach base, and then retired 21 of the next 25 batters he faced.

Reliever Alex Godzak came in for Pierce in the eighth and threw two scoreless innings to earn his first career save.

Pierce was one of eight players across the country to receive the award from Collegiate Baseball.

Pierce is the third Canisius player to claim the award in the last four years. Godzak was a recipient after throwing the first seven innings of the Griffs’ nine-inning no-hitter vs. Iona in March, 2013.
