Koita & Avery Named Corvias ECAC Track & Field Athletes of the Week

Edison, N.J. – Manhattan College's Mohamed Koita and Iona College's  Kate Avery have been named Corvias ECAC Division I Metro/Upstate Men's and Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week.

Koita established a new school record with his first place finish in the high jump at the Draddy Invitational on Saturday.  He raised his own mark to 2.20 meters (seven feet, 2.5 inches), one centimeter higher than his previous record jumped on Dec. 15.  Koita is now seventh on this season’s NCAA Qualifying list.

Avery led the Gaels this week with a record breaking performance at the 2014 NYRR Millrose Games in the women's 3,000-meter elite race at the Armory Track & Field Center in Manhattan Saturday. Avery finished eighth overall and was the second collegiate finisher in 8:56.20 and set a time that ranks No. 2 on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List this season. It was also a personal best time and set a new school record. She becomes the first Iona woman to run a three kilometer time under nine minutes and shattered the previous school record by more than 20 seconds.

The 2014 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held on Friday, February 21st at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center in NYC.
