Edison, N.J. – Saint Peter’s freshman Matea Samardzic and Jonathan Gomez have been named Corvias ECAC Swimmers of the Week. Matea and Gomez have been honored after a record breaking week for the two Peacocks.
Matea Samardzic was a key contributor to Saint Peter’s top four finish in the MAAC swimming & diving championship in Buffalo, N.Y. over the weekend. Samardzic was also named the 2014 MAAC Women’s Championship Most Outstanding Swimmer. Samardzic, who qualified for the NCAA meet championship with her MAAC record breaking 200 back time, placed first in six events and second in another. Samardzic also broke four records, two individual, during the championship meet. Her 200 back time of 1:56.52 broke the MAAC championship record by nearly four seconds that had been standing since 2009, when Rider’s Kellyanne Tomasula set a time of 2:00.30. Earlier in the weekend Samardzic broke the MAAC championship 100 back record with a time of 55.62. She was also the lead leg in the two record breaking relays that Saint Peter’s set in the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay.
Jonathan Gomez was just as impressive in the MAAC swimming & diving championship. Gomez, who was named the 2014 MAAC Men’s Championship Most Outstanding Swimmer, broke a record of his own during the meet. The 200 fly record time of 1:48.16 was broke last year by Canisius’ Shawn Parkhurt, before Gomez set his record in the 200 fly finishing in 1:47.99, on his way to three first place finishes and one second place finish during the weekend. Gomez tallied a total of 60 points for the men’s team which helped the Peacocks place fifth in the standings.
