Jaspers Bowen Named Senior CLASS Candidate

EDISON, N.J. – Kate Bowen, a senior pitcher/second baseman for the Manhattan College softball team, was selected as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award, created in 2001, recognizes student-athletes who have made a positive impact in their communities through their participation in athletics. CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School,
Bowen is a two-time MAAC All-Academic team member and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team in 2013. Bowen has been a Dean’s List student every semester at Manhattan, and was named the Physical Education Department’s Major of the Year for 2012-13.
In 2013, Bowen organized a “Sandy Hook Dedication Game” after the tragedy in her Connecticut hometown. Her teammates wore special jerseys and sold tee-shirts with the number 26 on them, one for each victim. Proceeds benefitted the 26 Angels Foundation which was founded by a Sandy Hook survivor to assist residents in Newtown.
Bowen is also an accomplished student-athlete. She is a team captain for the Jaspers, and a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She was Manhattan’s 2012-13 Female Student-Athlete of the Year, and was an All-MAAC first team selection after leading the team in batting (.367), his (61), doubles (12), runs scored (34), wins (9), complete games (10), innings pitched (106.2) and ERA (3.81, and was second with six homers and 33 RBI.
The list will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Women’s College World Series® in Oklahoma City May 29 through June 4.
