Iona Remains in First Place and Sets School Record with 18th Consecutive Win

EDISON, N.J. – The Iona College Gaels picked up two more league wins this week to up its league mark to 12-0 and extend its winning streak to a school record 18 games.

The Gaels knocked off Fairfield 68-55 on Thursday in a much-anticipated rematch between two of the leagues top teams. Damika Martinez led all scorers with 26 points, while Joy Adams recorded her 12th consecutive double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Then on Saturday, the Gaels defeated Siena 80-66 in Loudonville to earn the season sweep over the Saints.

On Thursday night at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. on ESPN3, the Manhattan Jaspers defeated the Siena Saints 62-55. The Jaspers snapped a three game skid with the win and also avoided being swept by the Saints, avenging an earlier season loss. With the win, the Jaspers move to 4-8 in the MAAC and 5-16 overall while the Saints drop to 1-11 in league play and 6-15 overall. In the win, Manhattan’s Allison Skrec was named the PepsiMax Player of the Game after she tallied a game-high 14 points and added five rebounds and five assists.

The Marist College Red Foxes extending its current winning streak to six games after a 2-0 week and still remain a half game behind the Gaels. Marist beat Rider 66-56 at home on Wednesday to begin the week and then topped Monmouth 65-40 on Saturday in a road contest to end the week. Senior guard Leanne Ockenden became the 20th Marist player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point career mark when she scored 14 points in the win over Monmouth.

The Quinnipiac Bobcats won their only contest of the week over Niagara 93-78 in a road game. Jasmine Martin, Samantha Guastella, and Ellen Cannon all scored in double figures to lead Quinnipiac in the win.

Fairfield, Manhattan, Monmouth, Niagara, and Rider all registered 1-1 weeks. Monmouth defeated Hourglass rival Saint Peter’s 52-41 on Thursday at the MAC, while Fairfield also picked up a 52-40 win against Saint Peter’s on Saturday at the Yanitelli Center. Niagara beat Canisius at home 69-60 in the Battle of the Bridge rivalry on Wednesday, while Rider picked up a 73-56 win against Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium on Saturday for its win of the week.     

On the season’s current league standings, Iona remains in first place at 12-0, while Marist remains a game out at 11-1. Fairfield and Quinnipiac both sit at 8-4 and are tied for third place in the MAAC. After another 1-1 week, Rider remains in fifth place at 6-6 to round out the top five.  

League play resumes on Tuesday when Fairfield host Monmouth at 7pm.

On Thursday at 6 pm, Rider will host Iona in Lawrenceville, N.J. at the Bronc Zoo on ESPN3 as part of the MAAC ESPN broadcast package. Also on Thursday, Saint Peter’s will travel to Riverdale, N.Y. to face Manhattan 7 pm and Siena will host Marist in Loudonville also at 7 pm.

Friday will feature the second ESPN3 broadcast of the week for MAAC Women’s Basketball when Canisius host Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara at 4 pm in the second match up of the season. Monmouth will host Quinnipiac at the MAC at 7 pm for the second game on the day.

On Saturday at 2 pm, Saint Peter’s host Siena and Manhattan host Iona. At 7 pm Marist will host Fairfield in a match up of two of the leagues top teams.

To conclude the week on Sunday, Canisius will visit Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. and Niagara will travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. to take on Rider with both games set to tip off at 1 pm.
