MAAC Offensive Player of the Week

Damika Martinez, Iona

Jr., G, 5-7, Meriden, CT/Orville H. Platt

Junior guard Damika Martinez averaged 29.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per outing in two Iona victories this week in league action. The two wins extended the team's winning streak to 18 games, a new Iona basketball record, one ahead of the 17 game winning streak of the 1979-80 men's squad led by legendary coach Jim Valvano. At 12-0 in conference play this season, the Gaels have also won 19 consecutive regular season MAAC contests dating back to last season. Martinez opened with a 26 point effort against Fairfield in a 68-55 Iona victory. Martinez connected on 10 field goals, including three from the outside. Martinez also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists and grabbed two steals in the win. In the win, Martinez moved into third place all-time in scoring at Iona in just her 83rd career game. Two days later, Martinez poured in 33 points, her highest scoring output in conference play this season, in an 80-66 win over Siena. Martinez knocked in 10 of her 18 attempts from the field, including a career high seven from behind the arc. Martinez also had two assists, four rebounds and two steals in the win.

MAAC Rookie of the Week

Meghan Donohue, Siena

Fr., F, 6-2, Mogadore, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban

Donohue averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in two games last week for the Saints. Against first place Iona on Saturday, Donohue dominated inside against arguably the MAAC’s premiere frontcourt tandem of Joy Adams and Sabrina Jeridore. She scored a career-high 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting and added nine rebounds. Donohue contributed nine points, four rebounds and tied a career-best with three steals for the Saints Thursday against Manhattan. Donohue’s 188 points scored this year are already the most by a Siena freshman since Laura Menty scored 391 points en route to being named the MAAC Rookie of the Year during the 2004-05 season.
