EDISON, N.J. - Iona College junior guard Damika Martinez has been named Corvias ECAC Metro/Upstate Division I Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Martinez averaged 29.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per outing in two Iona victories this week in league action. The two wins extended the team's winning streak to 18 games, a new Iona basketball record, one ahead of the 17 game winning streak of the 1979-80 men's squad led by legendary coach Jim Valvano. At 12-0 in conference play this season, the Gaels have also won 19 consecutive regular season MAAC contests dating back to last season. Martinez opened with a 26 point effort against Fairfield in a 68-55 Iona victory. Martinez connected on 10 field goals, including three from the outside. Martinez also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists and grabbed two steals in the win. In the win, Martinez moved into third place all-time in scoring at Iona in just her 83rd career game. Two days later, Martinez poured in 33 points, her highest scoring output in conference play this season, in an 80-66 win over Siena. Martinez knocked in 10 of her 18 attempts from the field, including a career high seven from behind the arc. Martinez also had two assists, four rebounds and two steals in the win.
Martinez was also named MAAC Player of the Week on Monday for the fourth time in the 2013-14 season.
