Edison, N.J. – Iona College's Kate Avery has been named Corvias ECAC Division I Metro/Upstate Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week.
Kate Avery set a new Iona record in the mile event at the Lions Invitational at the Armory Track & Field Center. Avery blazed a 4:38.24 and was the top collegiate finisher in the event while crossing second overall. The next collegiate finisher was host Columbia's Oliva Sadler in sixth place overall (4:48.35) and 10 seconds behind Avery. The time was .61 seconds faster than Heidi Gregson's record of 4:38.85 at the UW Husky Classic on Feb. 10, 2012 and earned Avery an ECAC qualifying time.
Avery's time was the sixth fastest on the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List this season at the time of the event’s completion. She fell to eighth following two additions from the New Mexico Invitational later in the evening.
