EDISON, N.J. – The Canisius College men’s basketball team is the second from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to accept an invitation to play in the 2014 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).

Canisius will open play in the CIT with a home game on Tuesday, March 18, facing VMI. Tipoff at the Koessler Athletic Center will be a 7 p.m.

The Golden Griffins are appearing in the CIT for the second consecutive year after advancing to the tourney’s quarterfinal round last year. Earlier on Saturday, Quinnipiac University, which finished in a tie for third in the MAAC with Canisius with a 14-6 record, announced it had accepted a bid to play in the CIT.

The Griffs are 21-12 after advancing to the 2014 MAAC Championship semifinals, for the first time since 2002, last week. Canisius is one victory shy of the school’s all-time single season mark for victories (22), set in 1956-57 and matched in 1993-94.

Canisius’ senior guard Billy Baron currently ranks fourth nationally, and second in the MAAC in scoring, averaging 24.2 points per game. He was a first-team All-MAAC performer, and was named Pepsi MAAC Player of the Year in a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Baron’s backcourt mate, senior guard Chris Perez, adds 12.4 points per contest, while senior center Jordan Heath contributes 10.3 points per game. Another senior, forward Chris Manhertz, ranks sixth in the MAAC with 7.1 rebounds per game.
