MAAC finishes strong at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

Edison, N.J. – Four MAAC schools, consisting of five individuals, were representing the conference at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track and Field championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico this past weekend.

Kate Avery of Iona College finished ninth overall in the women’s 3,000 meter event with a time of 9:21.73. Avery was named a Second Team All-American, narrowly missing out on first team honors. At the MAAC championships, Avery was named the MAAC Women’s Track Most Outstanding Performer.

Iona’s Matt Gillespie finished tenth overall in the men’s 3,000 meter event with a time of 8:15.38. Gillespie was named a Second Team All-American for his finishing time. Gillespie was the only MAAC athlete to qualify for NCAA prelims in two events.

Manhattan’s Mohamed Koita took part in the men’s high jump competition for the Jaspers. Koitafinished 15th overall and was able to clear the bar set at 2.10 meters. Koita is the first Jasper to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2009. He needed three attempts to get over the 2.10 meter bar. Koita was named a Second Team All-American.

Saint Peter’s Isaiah Harris placed 14th in the men’s high jump, earning him second team All-American honors. He is the first Saint Peter's track and field athlete to ever garner this accolade. Harris cleared the bar set at 2.10 meters and beat out fellow MAAC competitor Mohamed Koita of Manhattan.  At the MAAC championships, Harris was named the MAAC Men’s Field Most Outstanding Performer.

Senior Mariah Toussaint of Monmouth University was named a Second Team All-American after competing in the women’s long jump at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Toussaint jumped a distance of 6.05 meters finishing 13th among competitors. She becomes the first MU athlete ever to be named an All-American at the Women’s Indoor Championships.
