Marist Trio Earns MAAC Softball Weekly Awards: March 4, 2014
Player of the Week
Taylor Kuzma – Marist
Jr., IF/OF, 5-9, Freehold, N.J./Colts Neck
Junior Taylor Kuzma came up big for the Red Foxes, as she helped Marist clinch a come-from-behind victory over North Carolina Central on Saturday. Kuzma nailed a walk-off two-run homer in the seventh inning, knocking in two runs to seal the victory for the Red Foxes. Kuzma was 4-for-9 from the plate, and drove in three runs. She also scored twice and recorded a .545 on base percentage, and a .778 slugging percentage.
Pitcher of the Week
Melanie White - Marist
Jr., RHP, 6-0, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon
In her first start of the season, junior Melanie White claimed her first win of the 2014 year, with a complete game victory over North Carolina Central on Saturday. In the outing, which the Red Foxes won 3-1, White scattered six hits and allowed just one run. White walked one and struck out seven, throwing 119 pitches. Overall, White pitched eight innings over the weekend. She is now 1-0 for the season.
Rookie of the Week
Jordynn Barrera – Marist
Fr., IF, R/R, 5-8, Clinton, Utah/Roy
At the Mercer Bear Classic last weekend, rookie Jordynn Barrera led the Red Foxes with two home runs and five RBI in four games. In a close contest against Mercer on Saturday, Barrera slugged a three-run homer to left center to help stake the Red Foxes to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning. The next day, she ripped her second round tripper of the season, also to left field, good for two runs in a 6-1 victory over North Carolina Central. In nine at bats, she scored twice and delivered three hits, with a .333 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Barrera started three games, playing in all four while notching six putouts and three assists.
