EDISON, N.J. – Two MAAC Men's Lacrosse student-athletes were named on the 2014 Tewaaraton Award Watch List presented by Panama Jack, which recognizes the nation's top collegiate lacrosse players. 66 players were selected to this list and among those selected are Canisius College’s Tim Edwards and Siena College’s Richie Hurley.
Edwards ranks in the top 20 nationally in three different NCAA categories. He places third in the country by winning 67.6 percent of his faceoffs, 14th with 2.00 assists per game and 19th with 6.70 ground balls per game. Overall, he leads the Griffs with 28 points, eight goals, 20 assists and 67 ground balls in 10 games this season. Edwards is the only player in the country to lead his team at the faceoff X and record at least 10 points in 2014.
Hurley becomes the fifth player in Siena’s program history to be named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List joining Danny Martinsen (2013), Bryan Neufeld (2012), Brent Herbst (2010) and Matt Girsh (2008). A 2013 Second Team All-MAAC and 2014 Preseason All-MAAC selection, Hurley entered this week ranking second nationally in assists per game (3.30) and fourth in points per game (5.20). A two-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week (Mar. 10, 17), Hurley currently holds a 27-game point scoring streak and on Saturday became the 23rd player in program history to eclipse 100 career points.
The watch lists include the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the Tewaaraton Award. The selection committees are comprised of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
On April 24, the field will be narrowed to 25 men’s and 25 women’s nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions for players who earn a spot. Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced May 8 and will be invited to the May 29 ceremony in Washington.
About the Tewaaraton Foundation
First presented in 2001, the Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. Endorsed by the Mohawk Nation Council of Elders and US Lacrosse, the Tewaaraton Award symbolizes lacrosse’s centuries-old roots in Native American heritage. The Tewaaraton Foundation ensures the integrity and advances the mission of this award. Each year, the Tewaaraton Award celebrates one of the six tribal nations of the Iroquois Confederacy – the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora – and presents two scholarships to students of Native American descent.
