MAAC Sports
Senior guard Sean Armand of the Iona College men’s basketball team was selected to participate in the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, April 16-19, in Portsmouth, VA.
Armand was a first-team All-MAAC selection in 2013-14 after leading the Gaels and finishing fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 17.5 points per game. Armand was also fourth in the MAAC in assists with 4.1 per game, and fourth in minutes played per game (35.9). The 6-5, 200-pound Armand was also second in the MAAC and 12th nationally in 3-point field percentage (.442), and second in the MAAC and 20th nationally in three-point field goals made per game (2.9).
Armand led Iona to the MAAC regular season title in 2013-14, and to a second straight appearance in the conference’s title game. The Gaels won 92 games, appeared in two NCAA Tournaments, one NIT and the championship game of the CIT tourney in Armand’s four seasons.
With Armand's selection, an Iona men's basketball student-athlete has been represented at the prestigious P.I.T. for three consecutive years. His former teammates Mike Glover and Lamont Jones appeared in the 2012 and 2013 events. The Gaels join Oral Roberts and Temple as the only NCAA Division I programs to have players in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in each of the last three seasons.
Armand will play with Cherry Bekaert while in Portsmouth. Among his teammates will be Xavier Thames of San Diego State, the Mountain West Player of the Year; De’Mon Brooks of Davidson, a two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year; Chad Posthumus of Morehead State, the nation’s fourth leading rebounder, and three-point shooting specialist Andre Dawkins of Duke.
For the past 60 years, the Portsmouth Invitational has invited 64 of the best college basketball seniors from across the nation to participate in a four-day, 12-game tournament, playing before scouts and general managers representing every NBA team. Players such as John Stockton, Tim Hardaway and Scottie Pippen all participated in the PIT.
