MAAC Champion Iona To Face Washington In NCAA Softball

EDISON, N.J.  The Iona College softball team will be heading to Seattle to face host University of Washington in the first round of the NCAA Division I Softball Championship, May 15-17, it was announced Sunday evening as the NCAA Championship brackets were revealed on ESPNU.

Iona, 24-22, won its sixth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title on Sunday (May 11), defeating Iona 8-0 in the winner-take-all championship game. It was Iona’s fourth MAAC title in the last five years, and its first since 2012.

Game time for Iona vs. Washington in the first round is 7:00 pm (EST)/4:00 pm (PST) on May 15.

Washington finished the season at 33-13 and earned the NCAA Division I Softball Championship’s No. 12 seed. Also in the Seattle Regional are Brigham Young University (33-21) and Northwestern University (33-16). The double elimination tournament will begin on May 15.

The winner of the Seattle Regional will move on to face the winner of the Gainesville Regional in the Super Regional, May 22-25. The Gainesville Regional includes host University of Florida, which faces Florida A&M University in the opening round, and Stetson University and University of Central Florida.

The field of 64 includes 32 teams who received automatic bids and 32 at-large teams. The winners of the Super Regionals advance to the Women’s College World Series, May 29-June3/4, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
