Pierce, Schwartz Named to Olson Award Watch List

EDISON, N.J. – Two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball student-athletes are among 80 players included on the 2014 Gregg Olson Award “watch list,” it was announced this week.
Pitcher Rohn Pierce of Canisius College and pitcher/outfielder Jordan Schwartz of Niagara are members of the watch list. The Olson Award is named after former Auburn pitcher Gregg Olson who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success. Olson went on to become a two-time All American, first round draft pick, American League Rookie of the Year and MLB All Star.
Pierce is 10-2 for the Golden Griffins, with a 2.03 ERA. The two-time MAAC Pitcher of the week is allowing opposing batters to hit just .203 against him.
The versatile Schwartz has a 4-6 record as a pitcher, with 3.26 ERA. Opposing hitters have compiled a .222 average against him. As position player, he is hitting .213 with 17 RBI, 13 runs scored and 23 hits, including three doubles and one triple.
Initial nominations for the Award, presented by Toolshed Sports, were made by sports information/media contacts from schools across the country. The finalists and winner will be determined by an independent panel. Semifinalists are slated to be named, Friday, May 20th at the start of NCAA Regional play and the finalists are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6th at the beginning of Super Regional action. The winner of the 2014 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series which is to be held this season at TD Ameritrade Park from June 15-June 25/26. 2013
