EDISON, N.J. – The 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Baseball Championship, set for May 21-24 at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J., will take on a dramatic new look this year.

For the first time in the 21-year history of the event, six teams will compete in the Championship. The double elimination format will feature three games per day on May 21 thru May 23, until the championship round on May 24, when one game is scheduled (two if necessary).

In the first 20 years of the MAAC Baseball Championship, it was a four-team, double elimination format.

Entering the final weekend of regular season play, five teams have clinched berths in the 2014 championships, including defending champion Canisius College, and last year’s runnerup, Siena College. Fairfield University has also clinched. Two other schools will participate in the championship for the first time ever. The MAAC expanded to 11 schools beginning with the 2013-14 academic year, and both of the first-year schools, Monmouth University and Quinnipiac University, have earned spots in this year’s championship.

The sixth participant will be determined following the final weekend of regular season play this weekend. Five teams entered the weekend still vying for the last playoff berth.

Canisius, currently in first place in the MAAC standings, broke through by winning the championship last year, after finishing as the runnerup in 2012, 2010 and 2009. Siena has won the championship four times, most recently in 1999, and has been runnerup three more times. Fairfield will be looking for its first MAAC Championship after runnerup finishes in 1995 and 2000.

The championship will be held at FirstEnergy Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies Class A affiliate Lakewood BlueClaws. The state-of-the-art facility, which opened in 2001, features 6,588 seats, 20 luxury suites, two party decks, three picnic areas, and a full video scoreboard, with a 23' x 23' video board that can play over 4.4 trillion shades of color in high definition.

The Stadium is located less than 10 miles from the legendary Jersey Shore and is within minutes of notable resorts such as Point Pleasant Beach and Manasquan.

The 2014 MAAC Baseball Championship will be streamed lived on MAAC.TV, beginning with the Post-Season Awards Show at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20.
