Washington Defeats Iona In NCAA Softball

SEATTLE, WA - The Iona College softball team dropped its first contest of the 2014 NCAA Regional 8-0 to host No. 12 seed University of Washington Thursday (May 15) evening at Husky Softball Stadium.
The Huskies got on the board early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. After a leadoff single and back-to-back walks opened the frame, Kylee Lahners brought in the first run when she reached on the third consecutive base on balls by Iona starter Carly Argyle. Ali Aguilar followed with a grand slam to left center, her sixth home run of the season.
Washington added two more runs in the third inning. After leading off the inning with a walk, Kaitlin Inglesby scored later in the frame from second after an Iona error. Lahners later scored the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Whitney Jones.
Washington scored the final run of the contest in the sixth when Dani Braun was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring pinch runner Mercedes Wetmore.
Ingelsby (14-4), the Washington starter, held the Iona bats in check, allowing just one baserunner on a second inning single by sophomore Sarah Schutz.
Argyle (15-9) took the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on six hits and ten walks while striking out one.
The Gaels look to stave off elimination Friday (May 16) evening when they take on Northwestern at 6:30 pm. Northwestern fell in the first game of the Seattle Regional, losing to Brigham Young 7-2.
The winner of the Iona-Northwestern contest will take on the loser of Washington vs. BYU at 9:00 pm.
