MAAC Sports
EDISON, N.J. – The field is set for the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Baseball Championship, May 21-24 at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J. For the first-time ever, the MAAC Baseball Championship will feature a six team field, and will grant the top two-seeded team byes in the double elimination event.
MAAC regular season champion Canisius (38-14 overall, 20-4 MAAC) is the top-seed and earned one of two first round byes. The Golden Griffins, who won last year’s championship, begin defense of their crown in the 7:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, May 21. Canisius enters the championship with the nation’s longest winning streak, 16-games.
No. 2 seed Siena (22-30, 17-7) also received a first-round bye and opens play on Thursday, May 22, at noon.
The MAAC Baseball Championship gets underway on Wednesday when No. 3 seed Fairfield (30-22, 15-8), takes on No. 6 seed Manhattan (17-31, 11-13) in the first game at 12:00 p.m. (noon).
In the second game on Wednesday, at 3:30 p.m., fourth-seeded Quinnipiac (17-29, 12-10) will take on No. 5 seed Monmouth (22-23, 12-10). Quinnipiac and Monmouth are both looking to make a dent in the championship in their first years as members of the MAAC.
There are three games scheduled for each of the first three days of the championship, Wednesday thru Friday (May 21-23), at 12:00, 3:30 and 7:00 p.m. The championship round is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday, May 24, with a second game set for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday if necessary.
Canisius broke through last year by winning its first ever championship last year, after finishing as the runnerup in 2012, 2010 and 2009.
Siena has won the championship four times, most recently in 1999, and has been runnerup three more times. Fairfield will be looking for its first MAAC Championship after runnerup finishes in 1995 and 2000. Manhattan has three championships under its belt, having won in 2006, 2011 and 2012. The Jaspers were runnersup and 2004 and 2007. Quinnipiac and Monmouth will be looking for their first MAAC titles,
