EDISON, N.J. -- Siena captain Vincent Citro (Montclair, N.J.) was one of six Division I players recognized Monday (May 26) as a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Citro was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Baseball Championships after guiding the Saints to their first Tournament Championship in 15 years and a berth in the NCAA Championship.
Citro hit .700 (14-for-20) in five Tournament games, helping Siena rally from the loser's bracket to claim the title with four consecutive wins in a 30-hour period this weekend.
He posted multi-hit games in all five Tournament contests, including four three-hit performances. The Saints' leadoff man scored nine runs, stole two bases and drew three walks, reaching base in 74% of his plate appearances without striking out.
Citro also made the play of the Tournament in the field, turning a 3-6-3 double-play with one-out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning in the first championship game to preserve Siena's 6-5 win.
Citro had six hits on Championship Sunday, and completed a perfect week in the field with 15 putouts in the unlikely doubleheader sweep of Canisius which entered the day with the nation's longest win streak (18 games) and ranked No. 29 in the weekly Collegiate Baseball poll.
Pitchers Justin Garza (Cal. St. Fullerton), Kyle Davis (Southern California), short stop Blake Trahan (Louisiana-Lafayette), designated hitter Brennan Morgan (Kennesaw St.) and short stop Camden Duzenack (Dallas Baptist) were also named National Players of the Week.
Citro and the Saints play their first NCAA Tournament game since 1999 Friday night at TCU in Fort Worth, Tex.
