EDISON, N.J. – For the second year in a row, Marist College has captured the 2013-14 Academy Bus MAAC Commissioner’s Cup. The Red Foxes also won the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup while newcomers to the league, Monmouth University, staked claim to the Men’s Commissioner’s Cup.

“The ability of Marist College and Monmouth University to win Academy Bus MAAC Commissioner Cups reflects each institution’s support of NCAA Division I athletics,” MAAC Commissioner Richard J. Ensor, Esq. said.  “I compliment both of the departments’ staffs and the commitment of their coaches and student-athletes to excel.”

The Academy Bus MAAC Commissioner’s Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 25 championship athletic events conducted within the MAAC.  Each institution is scored in all championships that it fields a varsity team.  However, only the scores from the men’s and women’s basketball participation, plus the other top six men’s and other top six women’s championships are used to determine an institution’s total points.

After the Red Foxes’ performance in the 2013-14 season, Marist now holds 12 overall Commissioner Cups. It also marks the fifth year in a row and 10th overall Women’s Commissioner Cup that the institution has won. This year Marist won its impressive 100th championship as the Women’s Swimming and Diving team took home the MAAC title. Marist also won the Women’s Basketball, Men’s Rowing and Men’s Tennis MAAC championships.

"I am very proud of the great work of our student-athletes, coaches and administrative staff for another exceptional year,” notes Tim Murray, Marist Athletic Director.  “Our athletic program continues to set a very high standard of excellence both on the athletic fields and also in the classroom."

Monmouth, which entered the league in the summer of 2013, started its MAAC career by staking claim to the Men’s Commissioner’s Cup amassing a total of 61.50 points. The Hawks’ Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams took home two of the four championships won in the 2013-14 year.

“On behalf of the Monmouth student-athletes and coaches, we are very proud of this accomplishment,” said Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth Athletic Director.  “We wanted to make the transition to the MAAC seamless, and to perform at a high level.  I believe we achieved that and earning this honor is testimony to the hard work and acceptances of the new challenges we faced.”

Marist finished the overall race with a total of 132.50 points, while Monmouth University finished in second place with 125.50 points.  On the men’s side, Monmouth captured the top spot with 61.50 points, followed by runner-up Canisius College (56.00).  Marist finished in the top spot in the women’s cup race by compiling 85.00 points, 11.50 points ahead of Fairfield University (73.50).
