MAAC Announces Outdoor Track & Field Major Awards

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Joe Compagni, head coach of the Monmouth men’s and women’s track programs, was named  the MAAC’s Outdoor “Coach of the Year” for both men’s and women’s programs after guiding the Hawks to a sweep of the 2014 MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It’s the second time Compagni has been honored by the MAAC this year after winning Coach of the Year for Indoor Track & Field.

In his 18th year as the head coach of Monmouth Compagni has earned numerous honors and created an excellent program at Monmouth. During his tenure, Coach Compagni has coached his teams to 29 Northeast Conference Championships in both cross country and track & field, increasing the programs’ total championship count to 31. In addition to team titles, Compagni has coached 218 men's and women's individual track titles in NEC competition, 141 All-East honorees at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, and 96 NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championship Qualifiers, while seven athletes have earned a total of nine All-American citations, joining Augie Zilincar (1968), in program annals.

Major Award Winners:

Isaiah Harris of Saint Peter’s was named the men’s Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events.  Harris won the long jump and high jump, and set a meet record while winning the triple jump of 15.38M for the second year in a row.

Matthew Gillespie of Iona was named the men’s Most Outstanding Performer for Track Events after winning the men’s 5000M. Gillespie set a new MAAC record in the event of 14:23.07. He also anchored the second place 4x800 relay team.

Monmouth’s Mariah Toussaint received the women’s Most Outstanding Performer for Field Events after winning the long jump with a new MAAC record of 6.00M, and placing second in the high jump with a final of 1.70M. In addition to her field performances she anchored the first place 4x100 relay team that set a new MAAC record of 46.87, she also claimed a first place finish in the 200M and a third place finish in the 100M.

Maya Rehberg of Iona was named the women’s Most Outstanding Performer for Track Events. Rehberg won the 3000M steeplechase with a new MAAC record of 10:31.48, and the 1500M run with a new record of 4:28.06. She finished with a third win in the 5000M run with a time of 17:27.55 to cap off an amazing championship meet.
