MAAC Volleyball Set to Start on Friday

EDISON, N.J. –The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball schedule is set to start on Friday August 29. Nine of the league’s 10 teams are in action this weekend, all playing in tournaments.
Canisius and Siena open up the 2014 season playing in Buffalo at the Buffalo Invite. The Golden Griffins face Ole Miss on Friday at 10 a.m. to open up the season for the league, while the Saints faces Lehigh at 12 noon and Ole Miss later on in the evening at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Canisius takes on Lehigh at 10 a.m. and Siena plays tournament host Buffalo at 12 noon. The Golden Griffins then face cross-town rival and tournament host Buffalo at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.
Fairfield starts its back-to-back title defense in the UNC-Wilmington Tournament in North Carolina. The Stags begin the season on Friday against Eastern Washington at 11:30 a.m. and then against tournament host UNC-Wilmington at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday at 10:30 a.m., Fairfield faces North Carolina State and at 5 p.m. the Stags take on Coastal Carolina to conclude the tournament.
Iona College’s 2014 volleyball campaign begins in State College, Pennsylvania at the Penn State Tournament. The Gaels face William & Mary on Friday at 5 p.m. to start the season. Then on Saturday, Iona takes on host and top team in the country Penn State at 10 a.m. and TCU at 4 p.m.
Manhattan begins its season in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania against La Salle on Friday at 1 p.m. in the La Salle Invitational. On Saturday, the Jaspers take on NJIT at 9 a.m. and close out the tournament facing Coppin State at 4:30 p.m.
Preseason favorites Marist College, will open up the season on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts in the Boston College Invite against Holy Cross. The Red Foxes take on both Hartford at 3 p.m. and invite host Boston College at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.
Niagara’s 2014 season starts with the Purple Eagles visiting Colgate on Friday at 6 p.m. The Purple Eagles will then travel to Syracuse, New York for the Syracuse Tournament on Saturday, where they will face Temple at 1:30 p.m. and Delaware State at 4 p.m. On Sunday, Niagara will face host Syracuse at 1:30 p.m. as the lone league match of the day.
The Quinnipiac Bobcats head to Hampstead, New York to participate in the Hofstra Invitational. The Bobcats face Lafayette on Friday at 3 p.m., then on Saturday take on invitational host Hofstra at 12:30 p.m., and St. Francis (NY) at 5 p.m.
Rider will be traveling to the west coast to play in the 36th Community Bankers Volleyball Classic in Stockton, California. The Broncs match up against Southern California at 8 p.m. E.T. on Friday night. On Saturday at 3 p.m. E.T., Rider takes on Pacific and at 8 p.m. E.T. they face Arkansas-Little Rock.
The Saint Peter’s Peacocks open up the 2014 season on Monday, September 1 at 2 p.m. in Queens, New York at St. John’s.
Volleyball weekly awards will begin on Tuesday, September 2. The league will select a player, libero, and rookie of the week each week until the MAAC Championship.
The 2014 Volleyball Championship will take place at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida. The championship will be held from November 20-22.
