MAAC Field Hockey Begins the 2014 Season

EDISON, N.J. – The 2014 Field Hockey season opened up Friday with four league teams in action. Two MAAC teams picked up season opening wins.
Monmouth picked up the league’s first win of the 2014 season with a 3-0 home win against Missouri State. Sophomore midfielder Alyssa Ercolino scored twice for the Hawks in the first half for the 2-0 advantage. Freshman forward Maartje Wicherink scored in the second half to put the game away, making the score 3-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Christen Piersanti recorded the shutout in her first collegiate appearance with three saves.
Sacred Heart earned a 2-1 overtime victory for their first win of the season. Villanova opened the game with the first score in the first half. Sacred Heart quickly came around to tie the game 1-1 on a goal by sophomore forward Danielle Gallagher. With no scores in the second half, the game would go to overtime. Once again, Gallagher scored in overtime for the Pioneers to take the victory. Junior goalkeeper Mary Altepeter recorded five saves in the contest.
Rider takes the field on Saturday to open their season, while the rest of the MAAC teams will take the field again on Sunday for a full slate of action which includes Siena’s first game of the season.
