Manhattan and Marist Open up Volleyball Season with Tournament Victories

EDISON, N.J. –The Manhattan College Jaspers won the La Salle Invitational, while the Marist College Red Foxes won all three of its matches in the Boston College Invitational.
The Jaspers’ opened up the season with a 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-19) victory over invitational host La Salle on Friday. On Saturday morning, Manhattan knocked off NJIT in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22), and in the evening, rallied from behind to defeat Coppin State 3-2 (18-25, 13-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-13) to win the invitational. Allie Yamashiro, who averaged 4.91 digs per set in the Jaspers’ three matches was named tournament MVP, while Sydney Volovski was also selected to the All-Tournament Team.
The Red Foxes’ began the season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-23) sweep over Holy Cross on Friday. On Saturday, Marist began the day with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-14) victory over Hartford, then beat invitational host Boston College 3-2 (19-25, 25-27, 25-15, 25-16, 15-10) in a come from behind win. Courtney Shaw earned Tournament MVP honors, while Amanda Schlegel and Mackenzie Stephens were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Fairfield, Niagara, Quinnipiac, and Siena all picked up victories during the opening weekend. The Stags defeated Coastal Carolina 3-2 on Saturday in the final match of the UNC Wilmington Hilton Garden Inn Wilmington Mayfaire Classic. Niagara beat Delaware State 3-2 on Saturday evening in the Syracuse Tournament. Quinnipiac opened up the season on Friday with a 3-2 victory over Lafayette in the Hofstra Invitational. Siena swept Lehigh 3-0 in the opening match on Friday in the Buffalo Invite.
