Player of the Week

Courtney Shaw, Marist 

Jr., RS, 6-0, Centennial Colo./Grandview/

Shaw was named Most Valuable Player of the Boston College Invitational after leading Marist to a 3-0 tournament record, with sweeps of Holy Cross and Hartford and a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Boston College of the ACC. For the week, Shaw hit an impressive .431 with 27 kills to go along with six blocks and four digs. In a 3-0 win over Holy Cross on Aug. 29, Shaw hit .667 with seven kills, one dig and one block. She contributed four kills, four blocks and a dig in a 3-0 win over Hartford on Aug. 30. In the tournament’s final match, Shaw had a team-high 16 kills and a .419 hitting percentage as Marist rallied from down 2-0 to defeat Boston College 3-2. Three of her kills came in the decisive fifth set.  

Libero of the Week

Allie Yamashiro, Manhattan

So., L, 5-4, Kapolei, Hawaii/Kamehameha

Yamashiro was named MVP of the La Salle Invitational, as the Jaspers went 3-0 and won the tournament title.  She averaged 4.91 digs per set and committed just one receiving error in the three victories.  After recording 15 digs and four assists in the season-opening win over La Salle on Friday, Yamashiro had a match-high 25 digs against NJIT on Saturday.  She added two service aces against the Highlanders.  Then in the five-set victory over Coppin State, Yamashiro registered 14 digs to go along with three assists.

Rookie of the Week

Nicole Matheis, Niagara 

Fr., OH, 6-0, Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills High School

Freshman Nicole Matheis made a solid start to her career as a Purple Eagle in four matches last week. She tied for team-high honors with 50 kills (2.94 kills per set) and led the team with 3.47 points per set while averaging 1.71 digs per set in four matches. Matheis was also second on the team with six aces and in serving percentage (.906). In her first career match, Matheis recorded a match-high 22 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double in a narrow five-set defeat at Colgate on Friday. On Saturday at the Big Orange Tournament in Syracuse, N.Y., she had seven kills and seven digs in a three set loss against Temple before helping NU to a five-set win over Delaware State later that day. Matheis had 11 kills, nine digs and a match-high six aces. In the final match of the tournament versus Syracuse on Sunday, Matheis had 10 kills to finish the weekend with three double-digit kills matches.
