RIVERDALE, N.Y. – One day after being named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week, Manhattan College junior goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) picked up another honor on Tuesday when she was selected Corvais ECAC Defensive Player of the Week. Skonieczny recorded eight saves in the Jaspers’ 1-1 tie with Niagara on Sunday.
Five of Skonieczy’s eight saves came in the second half, as Manhattan kept the game deadlocked despite being outshot 20-6. She stopped two shots in the final five minutes of regulation, then denied the Purple Eagles after a corner kick early in the first overtime. Skonieczy made another clutch save in the second overtime period to preserve the tie.
She shared the award with West Virginia defender Jess Crowder. The Preseason Second Team All-MAAC selection is the first Manhattan player to be recognized by the ECAC since Alicia DeFino took home ECAC Defensive Player of the Week honors three straight times from Sept. 26-Oct. 10, 2007.
