Fairfield Duo Named ECAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week

EDISON, N.J. – Fairfield University junior goalkeeper Matt Turner was one of two student-athletes named Division I men’s soccer “Co-Defensive Player of the Week” by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Turner, who was selected by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) as its Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, posted a shutout in his first career start for Fairfield, helping the stags post a 1-0 win over Army. The junior made seven saves to post his first career shutout, facing 14 shots in his 90 minutes of work.

Turner shares the ECAC honor with Joshua Yaro of Georgetown.

Fairfield University sophomore defender Ben Whitcomb was also one of two student-athletes named Division I men’s soccer “Co-Rookies of the Week” by the ECAC.

Whitcomb, who sat out last season, was selected by the MAAC as its Rookie of the Week on Monday also scored the game-winning goal in his debut, helping Fairfield to a season opening 1-0 win over Army.  While also shutting out the Black Knights defensively, Whitcomb knocked in the game-winner in the 29th minute.

Whitcomb shares the ECAC honor with Frantzdy Pierrot of Northeastern.
