POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After nine seasons as head volleyball coach at Marist, Tom Hanna is departing to become head volleyball coach at Akron.

Hanna, a 1991 Marist graduate, guided the Marist volleyball program for the past nine seasons. Through his tireless work, the Red Foxes reached new heights as a program. Marist won a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season championship for the first time in 2013, and won the regular-season title outright for the first time in 2014. The Red Foxes reached the final match of the MAAC Championships three times in the last six seasons.

Hanna was named MAAC Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2014.

“Marist will always be a special place to me,” Hanna said. “I’d like to thank Director of Athletics Tim Murray for the opportunity to coach at my alma mater. I’m grateful to the Marist administration for its support of the program, and to our student-athletes for their dedication on the floor and in the classroom.”

Prior to Hanna’s arrival, Marist had never placed higher than sixth in the MAAC. In his nine seasons with the Red Foxes, Hanna compiled an overall record of 139-134, with a mark of 89-73 in conference play.

In Hanna’s tenure, Marist had 16 First or Second Team All-MAAC selections. The Red Foxes had the Player of the Year (Mackenzie Stephens) and Libero of the Year (Brooke Zywick) in 2013, and the Setter of the Year (Amanda Schlegel) in 2014.

Marist also achieved tremendous success in the classroom on Hanna’s watch. The Red Foxes had 10 CoSIDA/Capital Academic All-District selections, including a school-record total of four in 2009. A total of 61 Red Foxes were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team the last nine years.

A national search for Hanna’s successor will begin immediately.
