Wilson Offensive Player of the Week
Marcos Nunez – Iona
So., F, 5-5, Tabaiba, Spain/La Salle San Ildentonso
On Wednesday, October 14 against Marist, Nunez recorded three assists for Iona as they defeated Marist 5-2. Nunez also scored a goal in the 79th minute as he was able to guide a shot past the Red Fox goalie while falling to ground in the box. On Saturday October 17 against the Siena Saints, Nunez tallied two more assists for Iona to give him seven total points for the week. The sophomore forward now has seven assists on the season to go along with six goals.
Wilson Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Turner - Fairfield
Sr., GK, 6-3, Park Ridge, NJ/St. Joseph’s
Turner turned in a pair of shutouts in his two starts last week for the Stags. Turner made three saves to keep Siena off the scoreboard on Wednesday, October 14 in a 2-0 Fairfield win. He tallied eight saves in a 0-0 double overtime draw with MAAC leader Monmouth University. The goalkeeper has not allowed a goal at home in more than 360 minutes dating back to September 22, when the Stags faced Army. For the season, Turner owns a 0.98 goals against average and a .803 save percentage.
Wilson Rookie of the Week
Daniel Huertas – Iona
Fr., F, 5-6, Madrid, Spain/Jose Luis Lopez Aranguren
The freshman continued his torrid offensive pace this season with two goals and an assist in Iona's 5-2 win over the Marist. Huertas's first goal gave Iona a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute, finishing a close-range shot in the box off assists from Oscar Gonzalez and Marcos Nunez. The second goal was off a feed from Nunez once again. The freshman now has seven goals and five assists on the season to lead the Gaels.
