EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) saw men’s and women’s basketball tip off last weekend and make national news while some MAAC schools recorded its first wins of the new season. The MAAC Volleyball Championships take place this weekend and will be hosted by Siena College.
In men’s basketball news, Monmouth University made national headlines when they knocked off UCLA on the road in a thrilling overtime game, 84-81 to begin its 2015-16 season. The Hawks recorded its first win against a PAC-12 opponent in program history. Monmouth was the number one trending topic on Twitter following the aftermath of the game. Monmouth continues its west coast trip when they take on USC on Monday, November 16 at 10:00 p.m. Fairfield University faced the number one team in the nation, the University of North Carolina, on Sunday night. Despite the result, Marcus Gilbert led all scorers in the game with 25 points. The Stags continue its season with a matchup against Northwestern on Wednesday, November 18 at 8:00 p.m. The Siena Saints faced the reigning men’s basketball champions, Duke University, and then faced the runner-up when they took on the Wisconsin Badgers in two road games. Marquis Wright scored 20 points against the Blue Devils and Nico Clareth scored 21 points against the Badgers. The Saints next opponent will be Radford University on the road on Friday, November 20 at 4:00 p.m. in the 2K Classic Benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. · Marist versus Dartmouth on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.
· Niagara versus Brown on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m.
· Rider at Maryland on Friday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cancun Challenge
· Manhattan versus Bucknell on Saturday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m.
· Saint Peter’s versus Princeton on Saturday, November 21 at 9:00 p.m.

In women’s basketball news, Fairfield University, Manhattan College and Rider University notched its first wins of the 2015-16 season. The Stags defeated La Salle University on Friday night 62-59. The Jaspers knocked off Fairleigh Dickinson University 85-78 on the road, behind a near triple double from Kayla Grimme. The Broncs defeated Towson 78-72 in its home opener. Marist College senior Sydney Coffey scored her 1,000th career point in the Red Foxes matchup with South Dakota State. Notable women’s basketball games this week include:
· Iona versus VCU on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.
· Manhattan versus Fordham on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m.
· Monmouth versus Robert Morris on Thursday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m.
· Iona at North Carolina on Saturday, November 21 at 3:00 p.m.
· Marist at St. John’s University on Sunday, November 22 at 7:00 p.m.

The 2015 (MAAC) Volleyball regular season came to a close on Sunday, November 15. The championship will be hosted by Siena College in Loudonville, New York from Friday, November 20 through Sunday, November 22. Fairfield is the regular season champions and have earned a first round bye. Marist finished in second and has earned a bye. Third seeded Siena will take on sixth seeded Niagara on Friday, November 20 at 8:00 p.m. Fourth seeded Manhattan College faces fifth seeded Rider on Friday, November 20 at 5:00 p.m. Fairfield faces the winner of Manhattan/Rider and Marist faces the winner of Siena/Niagara.
